The course covers the following content:

Essential Emergency First Aid Techniques

The learner must:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Be able to assess an incident
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally (CPR)
  • Be able understand the importance of, and be able to use an AED (automated external defibrillator)
  • Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • Manage a casualty who is wounded and bleeding (including catastrophic bleeding)
  • Manage a casualty who is in shock
  • Understand how to manage a casualty with a minor injury.

Practical assessments are included for CPR and AED, recovery position, choking and wounds and bleeding. There is also a multiple choice questionnaire covering other areas of the training.

Additional Information

This Emergency First Aid qualification and its learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council (UK) and Skills for Health Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications.

It is based on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) training standard for delivery of Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) courses for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, and is suitable for those who deal with first aid at work, enabling them to be Emergency first aiders under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

It comprises 1 mandatory units with a total value of 1 credit.

Please note - Minimum contact teaching hours apply to this qualification. Training should be delivered in no less than 6 hours (1 day).
Candidates must bring along a piece of photo identification in order to sign in at the start of this course.
